As the willow bends
As the willow stings
As the branches whip my hands
I shape them into things
I shape them into baskets
I shape them into chairs
Each is creation made with a craftsmens care

I am the willow weaver
I work in Thurmaston
My loving wife and I
We have us 6 fine sons

But once I was a soldier
In a war yet to be won
I was destined to survive those battles and those guns

Once 10 men of my regiment were in a trench with me
9 of them were soon to be chosen for eternity

When death came from the sky
It was sent direct from hell
11 of us faced the cruelty of the shell

2 of us were wounded
9 of us lay dead
My wound became the faded scar you see on my forehead

That’s where the shrapnel hit, just under my hairline
It was my turn for a miracle
God said “It’s not your time”

In my wallet there’s a photograph
Three lads in uniform
I’m with a couple of the boys who perished on on that morn

Though I rarely speak of them
The comrades that were lost
For the vanity of empires they paid the human cost
